The TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (Cert IV TAE) is the latest national qualification for workplace and vocational trainers and assessors. This new Cert IV TAE course supersedes the older Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training (BSZ40198) qualification, and is now the standard to become a qualified trainer in Australia.
There is currently no available BSZ40198 upgrade option right now, and you will need to enrol in the full TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment course to update your qualification. However, because you already hold the BSZ40198 Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training qualification, your study load for the new TAE40116 online may be significantly reduced.
Among the biggest changes in this new training and assessment course is the addition of the TAELLN411 – Address Adult Language, Literacy, and Numeracy Skills unit as a required core unit. This means that all trainers are now required to hold the TAELLN411 unit or equivalent when you upgrade to the TAE40116 course. The TAEASS502 – Develop Assessment Tools unit was also added and will now be part of your study.
The NEW TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment comprises 10 course units, including 9 core units plus 1 elective units. This is a mixed mode online course. Please read complete course information for this latest qualification here.

The latest TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment has an estimated study duration of up to 1201 hours, but this is heavily dependent on your existing skills and knowledge. Holding relevant qualifications and having recent training-related work experience will greatly influence your actual study time.
When you enrol in this course, you will complete a Personal Learning Plan Evaluation, and assigned a ‘Cohort’ based on your skills and knowledge. Each Cohort has its own recommended study hours:
Beginner – For learners with limited knowledge or skills, and no recent industry experience. Study time is up to 1201 hours. Course duration is 12 months.
Intermediate – For learners with some recent industry experience, and moderate knowledge and skills in workplace training. Study time is up to 981 hours. Course duration is 12 months.
Advanced – For learners with extensive knowledge and skills, and have at least 2 years of recent industry experience as an RTO/TAFE trainer and assessor. Study time is up to 748 hours. Course duration is 12 months.
Expert – For learners who have more than 5 years of recent experience as an RTO/TAFE trainer and assessor. Study time is up to 600 hours. Course duration is 12 months.
Learners who hold the old BSZ40198 qualification and have recent industry experience, may be assigned to the Intermediate Cohort. You may be assigned to an even higher cohort if you have additional years of training experience in an RTO, design learning programs and assessment tools for the Vocational Education and Training sector, or participate regularly in assessment validation. You will need to provide evidence to support your level of skills and knowledge for your BSZ to TAE40116 Upgrade.
Additionally, many trainers who hold the old course have significant experience in the training industry and may be eligible to gain Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for many of the remaining course units. This means, if you have significant relevant experience, you may be able to gain your BSZ to TAE upgrade faster.
