What Will You Learn in the Community Services Course?

The Diploma of Community Services online course will prepare you for a rewarding career in the community services industry.

You will learn how to fulfil the critical functions of case management as workers involved in the managing, co-ordinating, and/or delivering of person-centered services to individuals, groups, and communities, and contributing to the community services industry.

Other critical skills and knowledge you will learn are the Australian legal and ethical frameworks you need to follow as a community service worker, how to develop, facilitate and review all aspects of case management, and how to develop and implement service programs as a member of the community services industry.

In the Case Management specialisation of the CHC52015, your additional focus will be on how to provide case management supervision, facilitate workplace debriefing and support processes, and also lead and manage team effectiveness.

Additionally, throughout our Community Services course you will learn more general skills to help you work and communicate effectively in the community services sector, follow and improve professional practice, and undertake project work.

Course Outline & Structure for Community Services

Inspire Education has clustered the CHC52015 to create a more effective and easy to follow learning experience. By grouping together similar course units, we have minimised the amount of repetitive course work you have to do to gain your qualification.

This means that you only need to complete 7 workbooks to complete your course instead of studying and submitting requirements for each unit individually.

You will complete a Personal Learning Plan Evaluation as part of your enrolment. You will then be provided with a training plan that identifies your Cohort, taking into account your existing level of relevant knowledge and skills. The amount of training and support required for each learner will vary on these 4 Cohorts:

  • Beginner (Full Study Model) – Limited relevant knowledge or skill in the competence contained in this qualification. No recent related industry experience. Study hours is up to 990 hours
  • Intermediate (Partial Study Model) – Moderate relevant knowledge and skill with limited recent related industry experience. Study hours is up to 830 hours
  • Advanced (Partial Recognition Pathway) – Extensive relevant knowledge and skill with recent related industry work experience of 1 year or more. Study hours is up to 630 hours
  • Expert (Assessment only) – Current industry experience of 2 or more years and extensive relevant knowledge and skill. These candidates are recommended to undertake a full recognition pathway. Study hours is up to 504 hours

Expected Study Hours: There are up to 990 study hours for this course (including Vocational Placement), depending on your industry experience and relevant knowledge.

Assessment Methods: Assessment methods for this course include a combination of questioning, product-based methods, portfolio, direct observation, and third-party evidence. These will give you maximum opportunity to develop your knowledge in community services and specialise in case management.

CHC52015 Course Units

The Diploma of Community Services (Case Management) is made up of 16 units in total. This covers 8 core units and 8 elective units, including the required electives to specialise in case management.

Core Units (8):

CHCCCS007 – Develop and implement service programs
– Develop workplace communication strategies
– Analyse impacts of sociological factors on clients in community work and services
– Manage and promote diversity
– Manage legal and ethical compliance
– Facilitate workplace debriefing and support processes
CHCPRP003 – 
Reflect on and improve own professional practice
– Manage work health and safety

The following electives are required to gain a specialisation in case management.

Case Management Specialisation Units (4):

CHCCCS004 – Assess co-existing needs
– Coordinate complex case requirements
Develop, facilitate and review all aspects of case management
– Provide case management supervision

Additional electives have been chosen to complete your course and ensure you have a holistic and flexible set of skills for the community services industry.

BSBWOR502 – Lead and manage team effectiveness
BSBWOR501 – Manage personal work priorities and professional development

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course; however, it is recommended that students:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Have sound language and literacy skills (at least Year 10 English, or equivalent)
  • Have basic computer skills

Students are required to:

  • Obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI)
  • Provide a valid ID with his/her picture and signature
  • Undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy Evaluation
  • Undertake a Personal Learning Plan Evaluation before accessing the course materials and commencing studies

All students considering a self-paced online course should give consideration to the following prior to enrolment:

 Ability to access any required technologies
 Information technology skills in accessing and using online programs
 Experience and self-motivation to learn on their own
 Competing pressures, such as work and family commitments, that may impact self-paced study time

To support you in your online Community Services course, Inspire will provide:

To complete your online Community Services course, you will need to arrange access to:

  • Computer with:
    • Internet access through Google Chrome
    • Ms Word, PowerPoint, or equivalent applications
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • At least five (5) people who have email accounts
  • At least four (4) volunteers for the role-play task
  • A video-recording device (e.g. mobile phone with video and audio recording capabilities, webcam, digital camera, etc.)

Vocational Placement

Due to units containing mandatory workplace skills component, students will undertake a minimum of 100 hours to a maximum of 240 hours of vocational placement within a registered and approved organisation. Students are required to complete Subjects 1-6 before entering their Vocational Placement.

Your Vocational Placement Provider must provide access to:

  • At least three (3) clients with access to services based on socio-cultural information gathered
  • Organisational policies and procedures
  • Workplace documents
  • Two (2) workers in the vocational placement facility
  • Use of suitable facilities, equipment, and resources

Note: Students may be required to complete a Police Check, Blue Card or Working With Children Check prior to commencing their vocational placement at their chosen facility. Any costs will be shouldered by the student. For students planning to do their vocational placement in Queensland, the National Health and Medical Research Council recommends immunisation for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and influenza. Similar regulations in other states and territories may also apply to you.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
