What is Occupational Health and Safety?

OH&S Course Aims

The overall aim of OHS is to ensure the health and safety of workers in their respective workplaces by ensuring the environment is healthy through implementation of adequate safety procedures and that employees have appropriate access to personal protective equipment. OHS is implemented by maintaining and promoting the health and well-being of workers and by preventing accident, injury, illness or death.

Safety Officers

Safety officers are responsible for the overall health and safety of all workers. As a safety officer you will have many duties, including but not limited to:

• Design and maintain safety regulations within an organisation (formation of OHS training guidelines and regulations)
• Create and maintain safety forms
• Conduct training
• Participate in quality improvement activities
• Induct new employees
• Review skills, abilities and knowledge of yourself, the OHS team and staff in general
• Report OHS incidents, monitor OHS logs and assess potential hazards

Safety Training (OH&S Courses)

Currently, the Cert IV OHS is the Australian workplace health and safety industry standard and minimum qualification required for safety officers. The course comprises of nine units in total and is designed to allow students to gain the knowledge and skills to effectively contribute to the OHS management systems of an organisation. A variety of students chose to study the Cert IV OHS with many combining the qualification with a training and assessment or human resources certificate.

Students may also seek to enrol in the Diploma of OHS. Although the diploma has no formal prerequisites students are assumed to have a solid understanding of both OHS theory and OHS in practice (usually achieved through completion of the Cert IV OHS or significant work experience). The diploma allows students to enter the occupational health and safety industry as an OHS manager, safety officer, safety representative, committee member or OHS assessor.
