TESOL Course Graduates in South America
South America is hugely engaged with the United States political, economic and cultural practices and as such, English is a very important language for both business and personal life. While there is a demand of English teachers in South America, the pay and benefits are not comparable to those received in Asia. However, being a TESOL course student and English teacher in South America will allow you to live a comfortable life and offer you the change of a lifetime to travel the continent in between work hours!
Brazil and TESOL Course Certifications
Brazil is the worlds fifth largest country and is one of the most popular South American destinations, along with Chile, Colombia, Peru and Argentina. While TESOL Course graduates are encouraged to apply for work at any time during the year, the most popular application period is in January and February, as school in South America begins in late February and runs through until December (similar to Australia). The country officially speaks Portuguese and has a population of over 170 million.
To teach in Brazil there is no requirement for further study (like a bachelors degree) and there is no requirement for prior teaching experience – perfect for those with a TESOL Course certification. If you choose to work with a language institute you will be utilizing your TESOL Course qualification for tourism and business English. However, in the private sector there are many Brazilians learning English for personal benefit and these students can range from beginners to those with years of experience.
Where Can I Work in Brazil with a TESOL Course Certification?
Many English language teachers (graduates from TESOL Courses) will find employment in a private language centre in Rio. Many English language schools are located in the city centre giving both students and teachers easy access to transportation. Many of the students TESOL Certification graduates teach are adults and professionals who are interested in business English.
TESOL Courses and Brazil: Are flights and housing included?
Generally, accommodation is not included for TESOL Course graduates but employers may assist in helping you find accommodation. Also, flights are not included a TESOL contract but you will generally find your health care and visa are taken care of by your employer and your holidays will typically be paid. On average TESOL course grads are expected to work around 25 hours per week and sign a 12 month contract.
TESOL Courses and Brazil: What is the salary like?
In Brazil, the general wage for a TESOL Course graduate is around AUD800 – 1500 per month, depending on experience, your qualification type and whether you are within a private or public English language school. While this is relatively low in Australia, the cost of living is much different and although you may not save lots, there is lots of opportunity to travel the country on this salary. The cost of living in Brazil sits around AUD180 – 330 per month. Additionally, in most countries, like Brazil, it is likely you will find yourself supplementing your TESOL income with private language tuition in addition to your regular classes.
TESOL Courses: Should I Look for a TESOL Job Before Moving to Brazil or After?
While you can apply for a work permit abroad, generally you must search for a job in person, with many English language schools do not recruit from overseas and prefer to meet you in person before offering a contract. Living and working in Brazil also gives you access to nearby countries and the opportunity to teach throughout South America. It is also good to know a small amount of Spanish and Portuguese as many English language schools will not speak large amounts of English, this may distinguish you from other English language teacher applicants.

Rio de Janerio is famous for its nightlife and atmosphere. It is the MOST popular destination in Brazil for TESOL Course Graduates and offers many opportunities for English language teachers in private language schools as well as public government run schools. Rio de Janerio was rated 131 out of the 144 World Cities in terms of the cost of living overseas (with number one being the most expensive and number 144 being the least expensive). This shows that your money will go substantially further than say, Sydney (which is ranked at number 20) while living in Brazil. TESOL Courses and Brazil: Brasilia
Brasilia is the capital of Brazil. It is located in the centre of the country and due to size, boasts a lower cost of living than its counterparts, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janerio. Brasilia is a favorite among experienced TESOL teachers with many opportunities available.
TESOL Courses: What is it Like to Live in Brazil?
It is important to consider the cost of living of a country in comparison to your monthly wage. Also, if you have savings, check out the conversion rate online to see how long they will support you in your chosen TESOL Course destination. The currency used in Brazil is the Brazilian Real (BRL). Approximately the BRL1 = AUD0.45. The cost of living can be relatively low, due to the huge gap in wealth distribution throughout the country. For a one bedroom apartment in the city centre, rent is approximately BRL1,000 per month and outside the city centre costs around BRL615 per month.
