How long does the Cert IV in Training and Assessment take to complete?

Cert IV TAE Course Duration

August 24, 2017 Update! The new TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment course is now open for enrolments! Please click here to get complete course information. If you already hold the TAE40110, click here to upgrade to the TAE40116.

“How long will it take me to complete the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment?”

This is a common question among TAE40110 students who are concerned about the duration of their course. If you’re looking to start a new career or advance your current one, then you probably want to gain this qualification as soon as you can as well.

So how long will it take? That depends largely on you.

According to the My Skills government website, the average course duration advertised by training providers is around 13 weeks or 3 to 4 months. We make a conservative estimate of 610 hours work required for completion of the course, equal to around 16 weeks of full time study, or 12 hours a week of study over 12 months.

The actual length of your course largely depends on you. For example, if you have previous experience as a trainer or assessor, then you’re probably already familiar with the course and do not need to study everything again. You may even gain credit for one or more course units through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and only need to complete certain assessments to gain your new qualification. In this situation it may take you significantly less than 610 hours to finish your course.

If you are completely new to this industry, allow yourself more time to study the Learner Guides, undertake additional research as needed and complete the assessment tasks. Remember you need to do practical training delivery for some of your assessments, so factor in the time taken to organise and complete those (we recommend planning these well in advance so you have everything ready and can complete all your assessments before the course end date).

Either way, you will have trainers available to respond to questions and help you progress through the course.

Online vs Face to Face

How you choose to study the course can also affect how long it takes you to complete the course.

The Cert IV TAE online or distance learning option is self paced with a maximum duration of 6 or 12 months. We provide you with a guide to when each section of the course should be finished to be on track to complete in time, but ultimately it’s your choice when and how to study.

You can study intensively and get everything done in the first few months; set aside time each week and make regular progress towards your goals; or rush all the assignments a month before your course end date deadline. We recommend taking the first option or second options! They’re much more reliable than leaving everything to the last minute. You’ll give yourself time to complete resubmissions if required and if something comes up in your personal life and you need a few weeks off study, then you’ll have time up your sleeve.

The Face to Face and Blended delivery options both include time in the classroom working with an experienced trainer. Blended incorporates a 1×5 day workshop, while face to face has 2×5 day workshops. You then complete any remaining assessments through online training within 6 months. Our students normally find the workshops give them a huge head start on the course, allowing them to knock over some of the major assessments during the workshops and really get to grips with the core course concepts. On average, graduates of our Face to Face course typically gain their qualification several months sooner than online students.

Face to Face and Blended workshops are currently available in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne, Perth, Canberra, and Adelaide.

Can you please explain ‘resbmissions’ and timeframes allowed for them

    • Luke Imbong Luke Imbong says:

Hi Stephanie! Resubmissions refer to when you submit assignments (like workbooks) that need to be improved for you to be assessed as competent. When this happens, you trainer will give you feedback on what you can add or change to improve your answer. There’s no limit on how many times you can resubmit as long as you are within your course duration (you can choose between 6 months and 12 months). Please sign up for an information pack at the Cert IV TAE course page so that you can ask our coordinators any more questions you might have 🙂

  • Darryl Nelson says:

What would be the usual amount of face to face time required for a qualified teacher and practising trainer take to complete the course? Does Inspire Ed, provide an option for teachers, a number of RTO’s target only teachers and advertise three and four day face to face courses?

    • Luke Imbong Luke Imbong says:

Hi Darryl! What training and teaching qualification do you currently hold? You have a lot of options on how you can maximise your work experience through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL can significantly shorten your course because it acknowledges that you already have the required skills and competencies.

If you have the BSZ40198 or the TAA40104, you can get RPL for the majority of the course units of the latest TAE40110. Enquire on the BSZ Upgrade or the TAA Upgrade page to see if you are eligible for this. If you have a teaching qualification, you can go through the Fast Track for Teachers course to RPL your experience in delivering training.

Just remember that RPL depends heavily on the evidence you provide.

You can also enrol in a 1 or 2 week Face-to-Face class to take up the required units. The timetables for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and other cities across Australia are on the main Cert IV TAE page. Let us know if you have more questions, Daryyl!

  • Rebecca says:

I have enrolled for the TAE 1V course blended delivery, just wondering I have a statement of attainment for Plan & organise assessments TAE ASS401A, Assess competence TAEASS401A & Participate in Assessment Validation TAEASS403A, will I get RPL for those modules?

    • Luke Imbong Luke Imbong says:

Hi Rebecca! When did you take up these units? TAEASS401A and TAEASS403A aren’t part of the 10 units of the Cert IV TAE so it’s best to speak to your trainer to check your eligibility for RPL. Did you indicate that you would like to apply for RPL when you enroled? If not, you can still send your trainer a message via the student portal to get instructions on how to begin the RPL process.

  • Jodi Vuat says:

I am currently registered to complete a 6 month online course, what happens if I need to extend beyond 6 months to complete the course?

    • Luke Imbong Luke Imbong says:

Hi Jodi! If you think you’ll miss your 6-month deadline, you can simply apply for a course extension.

You can do this by logging into the student portal, clicking on “My Documents” on the left menu, clicking on the “Admin Forms” tab, then clicking on the Standard Student Extension form. You can also message your trainer here if you need help 🙂

  • Matthew Maitland says:

Hello . I’m interested in completing the cert iv in training and assessment. I would like to complete the course online as I am a fulltime worker. Before I enrol i have a couple of questions. I noticed that this course was offered for $690 for an intense 6 months. I would like to complete the cert as quick as I can but what would happen if I fail to meet the 6 month dead line. I would prefer to pay the cert of on a payment pay plan. I was wondering how this system would be set up and how much that would be both for the 6 and 12 month courses.

    Thanks for your help

    • Luke Imbong Luke Imbong says:

Hi Matthew! No worries, let me help you out with your questions.

      1. The 6-month online course for the Cert IV TAE is actually on a limited time $390 promo down from the regular course fee of $690. The 12-month online course is $690.
      2. Most students are able to complete their course before their deadline, but if you want more time, you can apply for a course extension for a fee of $125/month. You can also set your own start date to when the best time for you would be. For example, you can enrol today but have your 6-month course start next month (or the following month) when you have more free time to study.

Did I answer your question, Matthew? Let me know if you need more help! Don’t forget to also claim your free course infopack by enquiring on the Cert IV TAE page.

  • Kerrie says:

I started traing people 17 years ago and have had my own cafe where I was also responsible for the training of staff. I am wonding if there is any reccognised prior learning for practical experience and if so how do you go about assesing each applicant so you know what level they are at.

    • Luke Imbong Luke Imbong says:

Hi Kerrie! Yes, your practical experience can definitely be recognised as long as it meets the criteria of the course. Here’s a brief explanation of what you need to get RPL for your past training responsibilities:
      1. Recency – Have you conducted training in the past 12 months? You’re more likely to get RPL if your experience is recent.
      2. Relevance – Is your experience similar to what is taught by the Cert IV TAE? Take a look at the Cert IV TAE course units and check if you’re already doing them.
      3. Work documents – Do you have any documentation of the training you did before? This can be training outlines, feedback reports, training summary reports, assessment tools etc.

Did that answer your question, Kerrie? We give out an RPL kit that students can fill out to makes this process much easier. If you have more questions about RPL, you can enquire on the Cert IV TAE course page and our Enrolment Coordinator will reach out to you 🙂

  • kiranjeet kaur says:

Cert iv TAE course enrolment now online is only possible in $390 ! and what are the requirements for this course?

  • Dylan says:

    Hi Luke,
I have heard that once enrolled in a cert iv TAE, you only need to have completed 5 units before you can start teaching. If this is true, I am just wondering if you know which 5 units of competency (out of the 10) in the TAE course one must complete before they start teaching.

    • Joshua says:

Hi Dylan. If you plan to deliver training, but not assess, then you need to complete the TAEDEL301A, BSBCMM401A, TAEDEL401A, and TAEDEL402A units. However, it’s best to confirm first with your employer about your role. Our Enrolment Coordinator will be glad to talk to you about this. Please enquire here to get in touch.

  • Hana says:

Hi, I was a secondary school teacher in Singapore for 10 years. But I have not been teaching for the last 4 years. Can I still take advantage of RPL?

    • Joshua says:

Hi Hana. Recent work experience is very important when applying for RPL, so we’ll have to check that. Nonetheless, please enquire here so our Enrolment Coordinator can get in touch with you to discuss.

  • paula says:

Do I have to complete a cert IV in TAE before a diploma? does the diploma cover everything?

    • Joshua says:

Hi Paula. You do not need the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment to study the Diploma of Training Design and Development. However, you might find studying the Diploma extra difficult if you don’t have any background knowledge or experience in training and assessment. Our Enrolment Coordinator will be glad to discuss this further; enquire here at the Training Design Diploma page to get in touch.
