Government funding available for Aged Care and Nursing Training

The Aged Care Education and Training Incentive Program is an initiative by the Australian Government designed to encourage aged care workers to gain further qualifications to develop their career as a personal care worker, enrolled nurse or registered nurse.

Funding for the program started in 2010 and will continue for 4 years. A total of $59.9 million has been budgeted over the course of the program. The scheme provides incentive payments to eligible aged care workers for undertaking specific training programs to upgrade their qualifications.

How to Qualify

You must be working for an eligible aged care service to qualify for the incentive payments. More information about the conditions for eligibility can be found on the website here.

Eligible Aged Care and Nursing Courses

Incentive payments are available for a range of courses:

Aged and community services courses including:

Enrolled nursing courses including:

  • • Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 nursing)
  • • Certificate IV in Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 nursing)

Registered nurse training courses:

  • • Undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing

Value of Training Incentive Payments

Eligible aged care candidates participating in the program can receive two payments. One payment will be made after the commencement of the course and a second after completion. The value of the incentive payment depends on the level of study. To qualify for these payments, you must have started your course on or after the 1st July 2010.

Vocational Education and Training Course

  • • $500 after commencement
  • • $500 after completion

Enrolled Nurse Training Courses

  • • $1000 after commencement
  • • $1500 after completion

Registered Nurse Training Courses

  • • $2000 after commencement
  • • $3000 after completion

Payments are only available until the allocated funding runs out.

Are there conditions on the training payments?

No. Aged care workers who qualify and receive the payments do not have to spend them on training costs. The money can be spent however the recipient chooses.

How long do I have to apply?

Applications should be made within 6 months of commencement of an eligible training program in order to receive a commencement payment. Separate forms need to be completed for commencement and completion. Commencement forms must be lodged before a completion form can be lodged.
