Course outline & structure

This Diploma in Early Childhood Education course will provide you first-class training and student support while you undertake your advanced training in child care. Our children’s services trainers have over 15 years experience in delivering nationally accredited and recognised child care training courses designed to meet the needs of students from a broad range of backgrounds.

More specifically, students undertaking Diploma of Children’s Services training are normally wishing to become a Supervisor, Coordinator, Manager, Director, or Group Leader in a Childcare Centre, or work as a Child Development worker or Children’s Services Manager.

Child Care Course units

The Diploma of Children’s Services is comprised of 13 core units, and 5 electives. It is Australia’s respected, nationally recognised and accredited Diploma qualification in child care.

Core Units include (13 total):

CHCCN511A – Establish and maintain a safe and healthy environment for children
CHCFC502A – Foster physical development in early childhood
CHCFC503A – Foster social development in early childhood
CHCFC504A – Support emotional and psychological development in early childhood
CHCFC505A – Foster cognitive development in early childhood
CHCFC506A – Foster children’s language and communication development
CHCIC501A – Manage children’s services workplace practice to address regulations and quality assurance
CHCIC510A – Establish and implement plans for developing cooperative behaviour
CHCIC512A – Plan and implement inclusion of children with additional needs
CHCPR502E – Organise experiences to facilitate and enhance children’s development
CHCPR509A – Gather, interpret, and use information about children
CHCPR510B – Design, implement, and evaluate programs and care routines for children
CHCRF511A – Work in partnership with families to provide appropriate care for children

Vocational Placement

To successfully complete your studies in the Diploma of Children’s Services you will need to initiate contact with a registered Early Childhood Education facility to complete a recommended 368 hours (no more than 240 in a 12 month period) of workplace-based experience to solidify your practical experience and skills in working in early childhood education. This is so, while you are undertaking the theory at home, you are also able to apply the new skills you are learning as you learn them.

Entry Requirements

Before undertaking the Diploma in Children’s Service’s you must demonstrate competence through a recognised training program or recognition process, in the following units of competency:

  • CHCCHILD401B Identify and respond to children and young people at risk
  • CHCCN301C Ensure the health and safety of children
  • CHCCN302A Provide care for children
  • CHCCN303A Contribute to provision of nutritionally balanced food in a safe and hygienic manner
  • CHCCN305B Provide care for babies
  • CHCCS400C Work within a relevant legal and ethical framework
  • CHCFC301A Support the development of children
  • CHCIC301E Interact effectively with children
  • CHCPR301C Provide experiences to support children’s play and learning
  • CHCPR303D Develop understanding of children’s interests and developmental needs
  • HLTFA311A Apply first aid
  • HLTWHS300A Contribute to WHS processes

You must also have a sound understanding of the English language and good numeracy skills.

You will need to have:
• Access to a computer (PC or Mac) with Internet
• Adobe Flash Player 7
• Adobe Acrobat Reader (Essential for Mac Users)
• Microsoft Word 97 or later (for PC)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is offered to any Learner who can provide evidence of competency for the units offered within the Diploma of Children’s Services qualification. During the enrolment process a potential Learner may complete a checklist and discuss any prior evidence before commencing training to determine if they are eligible for RPL.

Training Schedule

The most popular method of delivery for the Diploma of Children’s Services is through via distance and/or Online Learning in the form of self-paced learning.  This advanced child care course has been specifically designed to develop the knowledge and skills required to work safely and effectively with young children, providing an opportunity for those with a passion for our youth to take a leading role in the care of children in a child care or other children’s services environment.

You will have 24 months to complete your child care diploma course from your enrolment date.  We have a continual intake of students on this basis throughout the year.
