What Will You Learn in the Accounting Diploma Course?

While studying your Diploma of Accounting (FNS50215), you will learn essential skills such as how to prepare tax returns for individuals.  You will also discover how to implement internal control processes, manage budgets and forecasts, prepare financial reports for corporate entities and provide financial and business performance information.

This accounting diploma course can be used to fulfill the ‘Primary Qualification’ requirements for Tax Agent registration in Australia! It may also be used to fulfill many of the educational requirements for BAS Agent registration (see Certification Requirements at the bottom of the page for more information).

Our Diploma of Accounting (FNS50215) course will help you develop a broad range of accounting skills integral to the operation of Australian businesses, governments and charities.  These skills are valued by prospective employers across all industry sectors and can be used in a huge range of professional accounting roles.

Course Outline & Structure

The FNS50215 Diploma of Accounting is a nationally recognised and accredited Australian accounting course.  It is ideal if you are seeking Tax/BAS agent registration and/or wish to enhance your skills and knowledge to take on more senior roles in accountancy.

Expected Study Hours: This accounting qualification course has an expected study time of 1200 hours. This equals approximately 23 hours per week over 12 months.

Assessment Methods: This Diploma course is assessed using written questions, problem solving in scenarios or simulated activities, case studies and by gathering & creating documents.

FNS50215 Course Units

The FNS50215 Diploma of Accounting is comprised of 11 units – 6 core units and 5 elective units.  Our elective course units have been carefully chosen to ensure they meet the needs of a wide range of jobs requiring accounting skills.

Core Units include (6 total):

FNSACC501 – Provide financial and business performance information
FNSACC502 – Prepare tax documentation for individuals
FNSACC503 – Manage budgets and forecasts
FNSACC504 – Prepare financial reports for corporate entities*
FNSACC506 – Implement and maintain internal control procedures
FNSACC507 – Provide management accounting information

Electives (complete 5 of 5):

FNSACC405 – Maintain inventory records
BSBITU402 – Develop and use complex spreadsheets
FNSBKG405 Establish and maintain a payroll system
BSBFIA401 – Prepare financial reports
FNSACC301 – Process financial transactions and extract interim reports

 

The Diploma of Accounting shares some units with the FNS40215 Certificate IV in Bookkeeping and the FNS40615 Certificate IV in Accounting courses. If you hold either of these qualifications, you may be able to gain credit for units you have already completed and reduce your study load!

Entry Requirements

There are no prerequisites required to enter the Diploma of Accounting.

However, it is preferred that students:

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Have sound language and literacy skills (at least Year 10 English and Maths, or equivalent)
  • Hold the Certificate IV in Accounting OR have some accounting industry experience
  • Have basic computer skills preferably with Microsoft Word and Excel

Qualification Pathways

After completing your Diploma course, you can continue your studies with the FNS60215 Advanced Diploma of Accounting. The advanced diploma can lead to career outcomes such as financial accountant, taxation accountant or management accountant. You may be able to use the advanced diploma as an entry path into a Bachelor of Accounting qualification (or other business related disciplines).

Once enrolled in this course you may also consider additional training to complement your accounting skills:

TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment – to become an accounting trainer or enhance your workplace training skills.
FNS40215 Certificate IV in Bookkeeping – to develop additional skills to use in bookkeeping roles.
BSB40515 Certificate IV in Business Administration – to enhance your general business administration skills.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Certification Requirements

This Diploma of Accounting (FNS50215) course is an approved course you can use to fulfill the ‘Primary Qualification’ requirements for Tax Agent registration (see TASA 2009, schedule 2, part 2, item 203).

You can also use this qualification to fulfill the training requirements for BAS agent registration provided you have also completed the unit “FNSBKG404A – Carry out Business Activity and Installment Activity Statement tasks” (or equivalent). This unit is commonly included in the Certificate IV in Bookkeeping (FNS40215) and Certificate IV Accounting (FNS40615) qualifications, and is part of the Certificate IV in Accounting bridging course offered by Inspire Education.
