You’ll Miss Out Without a Diploma of Children’s Services
By William Cowie
We’re very proud of our child care trainers – they’re an amazing group of talented people who work very hard to get the best results for their students. They help a lot of people earn their Certificate III in Children’s Services each year, however, they think a lot of child care workers are missing out by not doing their Diploma of Children’s Services as well.
You’re short-changing yourself without a diploma in childcare
As everyone working in child care will know by now, from the first of January 2014, you need to have (or be working towards) your Certificate III in Children’s Services.
There is another rule, being introduced at the same time.
It requires that half of all child care workers at a long day care centre or preschool must have (or be working towards) a Diploma-level qualification in early childhood education.
That means child care centres are needing a LOT of diploma qualified child care workers!
Without a Diploma, you’re missing out
Australia is experiencing a national shortage of child care workers. According to the Government’s Skills Shortage List, the shortages are most pronounced for Diploma qualified Child Care Workers.
That means employers are having a lot of problems finding people with a diploma in childcare to fill jobs – or can’t find anyone at all!
Simply put, you’re short-changing yourself on job opportunities in child care if you don’t have your Diploma of Children’s Services.
You’re missing out on more pay in child care
Diploma qualified child care workers can earn around $5000 more per year than Certificate III qualified workers. That’s a big chunk-of-change.
With that much money, you can pay for your Diploma and still have money left over for a holiday!
You’re missing out on exciting challenges
You’ll have the skills to care for kids AND run the child care centre!
A Diploma of Children’s Services gives you a lot more flexibility at work. You can still look after the children, or you can take on more management responsibilities.
You’re missing out on more education opportunities
The Diploma in Children’s Services is an entry path into university degrees. With your child care diploma and work experience, you can go on to do your Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education.
Have you heard the expression ‘the early bird catches the worm’?
The Certificate III in Children’s Services is about to become the legal minimum standard for child care training. That means everyone will have one from 2014.
To stand out from the crowd and get the best opportunities, you start to start working on your Diploma of Children’s Services now. When the new regulations hit next year, you’ll be ready to take advantage of all the extra opportunities that come your way.
