Overtime and going home late is now a work health and safety issue

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is the leading vocational qualification in Australia. It is the qualification to become a trainer and assessor in the industry. It is also highly regarded for people holding training roles within organisations, and is a great addition to a manager or HR professional’s skillset.

Why would an organisation invest in training staff to get qualifications such as the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment?

Do you need staff training?

Staff training is increasingly recognised as one of the most important tools to stay competitive and profitable in a competitive modern marketplace. Many argue training of staff is absolutely essential to the success of a business and in recent times employees are confirming this in abundance!

To assess your need for employee training it is recommended you follow something along the lines of the following steps:

• Assess business (look at the long and short-term business goals and the organisations ability to achieve these, look at the employee goals and accomplishments and the impact training would have on such)
• Assess staff (analyse staff feedback and determine if a skills gap is present in the workplace, these are the skills required for future development)
• Create a training profile (identify the training courses available and the appropriate people for each course as well as the number of training hours involved)
• Create a training and development plan (this will demonstrate your commitment to the training process and include appropriate training events, employees involved and dates)
• Publicise the training and development plan (this ensures all staff have been advised of the development and learning opportunities available to them and promote equal access to training)

What are the major benefits of providing staff training?

There are a huge number of benefits associated with staff training. However, one of the largest benefits is the formal recognition of the training level of employees and its positive reflection on the company.

• Improved quality
• Increased productivity
• Greater flexibility and responsiveness to change
• Reduced insurance premiums
• Less wastage
• Reduced maintenance and repair costs
• Greater staff commitment
• Higher staff retention rate
• Improved morale

Why choose Vocational Education and Training?

While many business and individuals understand the importance of staff training, where to begin can be an entirely different question.

The biggest decision involves whether you will engage in higher education through a tertiary institution like university, or a vocational program through a TAFE or private college (for those of you intrigued about the difference of the two, I will get an article up that looks at the differences of each, so check back soon!).

However, in a nutshell, university often requires a minimum of three years education, with most degree qualifications requiring four to five years of study. The time factor associated with university may be impractical or inappropriate for some and can often be the sole deciding factor for many individuals. In comparison vocational education and training courses range from approximately six months to one year in length depending on the level of qualification (including Certificate I-IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma).

University is also heavily focused on the academic assessment of students, meaning the ability to gain practical workplace experience is little to none. There is also no guarantee of the availability of a graduate job. On the contrary, vocational courses are heavily focused on practical training and the development of trade skills and are often very in-demand with the job market. Some students even use vocational training as a stepping stone to university level study.

The last main difference between university and vocational education courses are the pricing difference. While both may grant access to education loans, university courses start from approximately $3,000 per year and VET courses can total around $1000 for a Cert IV level qualification (of course, both these figure vary greatly between levels and institutions so check with your training provider directly for the most up to date pricing information).
