Why choose Vocational Education and Training?
While many business and individuals understand the importance of staff training, where to begin can be an entirely different question.
The biggest decision involves whether you will engage in higher education through a tertiary institution like university, or a vocational program through a TAFE or private college (for those of you intrigued about the difference of the two, I will get an article up that looks at the differences of each, so check back soon!).
However, in a nutshell, university often requires a minimum of three years education, with most degree qualifications requiring four to five years of study. The time factor associated with university may be impractical or inappropriate for some and can often be the sole deciding factor for many individuals. In comparison vocational education and training courses range from approximately six months to one year in length depending on the level of qualification (including Certificate I-IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma).
University is also heavily focused on the academic assessment of students, meaning the ability to gain practical workplace experience is little to none. There is also no guarantee of the availability of a graduate job. On the contrary, vocational courses are heavily focused on practical training and the development of trade skills and are often very in-demand with the job market. Some students even use vocational training as a stepping stone to university level study.
The last main difference between university and vocational education courses are the pricing difference. While both may grant access to education loans, university courses start from approximately $3,000 per year and VET courses can total around $1000 for a Cert IV level qualification (of course, both these figure vary greatly between levels and institutions so check with your training provider directly for the most up to date pricing information).
