What does a Child Care Assistant and Group Leader do?

Overtime and going home late is now a work health and safety issue

Many of my Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care students are often curious as to what a childcare worker and group leader actually does on a day-to-day basis.

For your information (and theirs!) what follows is position descriptions for both a child care assistant, and childcare group leader.  Hope this helps to clear up this question if it has been on your mind!

Position Description for Childcare Assistant

  1. The role of the assistant is to assist with the provision of stimulating and educationally appropriate programs in order to ensure high quality care to children and their families. The major accountability of the role is the quality of care provided which has an impact on the level of satisfaction with the Centre by the children and families.
  2. Ability to work effectively with other members of the childcare team.
  3. Ability to work effectively with and work alongside work experience students.
  4. Ability to work effectively with parents and children using the centre.
  5. Ability to assist in the provision of a stimulating, enjoyable, caring and safe environment for children using the childcare centre facilities, ensuring that the standards required by state regulations and national accreditation principles are adhered to.
  6. To assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of developmental programmes and daily routines to ensure that the needs of children and parents are catered for.
  7. To accept and respond warmly to children’s behavior, different developmental levels and special needs to ensure that the environment at the centre is conducive to early childhood development.
  8. To use positive forms of behavior management that enhances the self esteem of children.
  9. To maintain the safety and hygiene of children in care at its optimum at all times to ensure the children are not exposed to any risks.
  10. To inform and maintain relationships with the families and offer empathy, understanding, kindness and referral to the Director if necessary.
  11. To understand and respect parents and children with different cultural and ethnic backgrounds and different child rearing practices to ensure that diversity is valued by the centre and to encourage parents to feel comfortable discussing issues relating to the care of their child.
  12. To set up and pack away equipment and requisites used by children and ensure storage areas are well organized and tidy; and floor coverings, furniture, equipment and toys are clean and maintained to a safe and hygienic standard.
  13. To contribute to the direction of the child care centre team by participating in meetings and providing input to review policies, systems and processes within the centre to ensure flexible and responsive service delivery that meets and exceeds client expectations.
  14. To contribute to the team by developing and utilizing effective communication lines with other members and providing support to others as needed to ensure cohesion and consistency in approach.
  15. To be aware of policies, principles and legal requirements in relation to Equal Employment Opportunity, and Health and Safety, reporting and acting on conditions liable to impact on the well-being of children and staff.
  16. Current First Aid and resuscitation certificate and Blue Card/ Working with Children Check.

Position Description for Group Leader

  1. Possession of appropriate qualification and experience.
  2. Ability to communicate and interact effectively with staff, parents and members of the public.
  3. Demonstrated ability to assist in the planning, implementation and evaluation of childcare programmes.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of the needs and interests of children aged from 0-6 years.
  5. Ability to work within the legislation relating to child care services.
  6. Knowledge of or an ability to acquire knowledge of procedures, policies, regulations and standards which impact upon the position  and a knowledge of contemporary human resource management issues such as workplace health and safety, equal opportunity, and anti-discrimination.
  7. Current First Aid and Resuscitation certificate.
  8. Current Blue Card registration.
  9. Ability to work effectively with other members of the childcare team.
  10. Ability to work effectively with and work alongside work experience students.
