Overtime and going home late is now a work health and safety issue

Workplace health and safety courses change every few years. They’re updated to reflect the needs of the industry, and changes to occupational health and safety laws in Australia.

Do you have an up-to-date occupational health and safety qualification?

The latest workplace health and safety qualification is BSB41412 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety. It supersedes the old BSB41407 Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety course, which will be completely phased out by the end of  2013.

 

What is the latest OHS/WHS qualification?

The BSB41412 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is the latest Australian vocational qualification in occupational health and safety.

It was first released in December 2012 and is the current occupational health and safety qualification. The new qualification increases the number of units required from 9 to 10.

The Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is up to date with all the latest OHS laws, regulations and codes of conduct in Australia.

Here’s a little information about the Certificate IV WHS course:

It’s designed for people working in occupational health and safety who may or may not work under supervision. Certificate IV qualified safety professionals can provide guidance and leadership to others and can have some limited responsibility for other workers.

This latest Certificate IV in OHS qualification reflects the needs of safety workers who apply a broad range of well-developed skills and knowledge in many work contexts. It is suitable for safety coordinators, advisers and facilitators.

The Certificate IV has no entry requirements, but it is preferred that you’ve already done a relevant Certificate III qualification; or if you have no qualification, you have some vocational experience in occupational health and safety.

The new qualification is also a pathway into the Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.

What qualifications are outdated?

There are a number of old occupational health and safety courses that have now been superseded in the vocational training industry.

You may still have one of these qualifications:

BSB41407 – Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety

Released: March 2009

The most recently superseded Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety course. It requires one less unit of study than the new qualification, and some of the units have been changed. You may find many other training organisations are still teaching the now superseded Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety.

Do you need to update to the latest OHS course?

It is still a current qualification for working in occupational health and safety. If you’re currently studying this course, it covers the latest OHS laws in Australia and best practices in the industry.

There is no need to upgrade to the latest course yet unless you prefer to always have the most current qualifications available.

There will soon be an upgrade option available for current Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety students. It will facilitate for students wanting to change from the Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety, to the latest Cert IV in Work Health and Safety qualification. Look out for that soon!

The BSB41407 Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety replaced:

BSB41604 – Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety

Released: August 2001

The BSB41604 Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety was superseded many years ago. It should no longer available anywhere in Australia.

Do you need to update to the latest OHS course?

1368582692_miniIf you’ve been working in the occupational health and safety industry since completing this qualification, you should still be up to date with the latest laws and practices in OHS. Even so, you should consider upgrading to the latest Certificate if you’ve had this qualification for more than 5 years.

Updating your Certificate is a valuable professional development activity, because it demonstrates to your employer that you’re continuously improving your skills. It also clearly shows that you’re up to date with latest OHS laws in Australia. Both of these factors are important for job seekers looking for work in Australia’s occupational health and safety industry.

The BSB41604 Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety replaced:

7486 – Course in Workplace Health and Safety

Released: December 1996

Course in Workplace Health and Safety was one of the original vocational occupational health and safety courses taught in Australia. It has long been out of date and hasn’t been taught for more than a decade.

There have been a lot of changes to occupational health and safety, as well as vocational training, since this course was last taught.

Do you need to update to the latest OHS course?

It is definitely worth doing the new Certificate IV course in OHS if this is your most up-to-date qualification – especially when looking for work.

Taking the new OHS course is a great way to clearly demonstrate your currency in the industry and show employers you’re continuously improving your skills.
